This workshop will show students how to create exciting and dynamic, semi- abstracted spaces, taking inspiration from an immersive studio installation. Students will use a limited number of dry materials to allow themselves to really prioritise form and focus on the drawn elements of their work.
This two day workshop will focus on how to depict objects and space in new, unusual and dynamic ways. We will be looking at how to relate to and represent our surroundings in a more abstracted way, encouraging different methods of creative response through the act of drawing and redrawing our environment.
The first day will begin with a comprehensive slide lecture which will illustrate the concepts of the workshop and will provide visual inspiration for the day. The morning and mid-morning sessions will consist of a series of 20 to 40-minute guided drawing experiments with demonstrations. The afternoon will consist of one larger, more sustained drawing using ideas formulated in the morning.
Over the course of the second day a limited palette in dry materials will be introduced to help push students’ drawings forward through the use of limited colour. The afternoon will again push students to work dynamically on a larger scale with the skills they’ve learnt, and will finish with a group critique of the works.
Students will build on their observational perception and drawing skills, and will also learn new methods to help them expand their ways of approaching objects and space in a creative manner. Julie Mehretu, Judy Pfaff, Alberto Giacommetti, Richard Hamilton are some of the artists that we will be looking at over the course of the workshop.
Students with some drawing experience may be more suited for this workshop, but it is not essential.
