Developing Painting is a full day, three term course structured to develop artists process and practice. It is designed to encourage those wishing to push their art practice from the source through to finished paintings.
Over the course of the three terms we will look at ways of developing research and editing source material, building up work in sketchbooks and in studies, moving these on through small paintings and printmaking and resolving finished pieces of work. The course will look at strategies to encourage work to evolve including working ‘in series’ and over time.
Students will be given some directed homework, will discuss contemporary art practice referencing
contemporary painters and artists and will undertake end of term group critiques.
Term 1 - Research
This term will involve gathering source material and focus on drawing from source, sketchbook development and will concentrate on developing the artists own subject of interest.
Term 2 . Development
Term 2 will involve developing a large series of small studies allowing for experimentation of surface and grounds, an exploration of materials and techniques , colour palettes, composition and working in multiples.
Term 3. Resolution
This term will concentrate on finding ways to resolve work ad will look at strategies such as working in series and over time, varying time and physical scale as well as how to present, curate and hang work.
The course is suitable for those with some painting experience who wish to push themselves and their practice.
