Introduction to Painting the Head

This 10-week introduction to the fascinating subject of portraiture will start with rudimentary anatomy, where measuring, proportion, line and tone are discussed and investigated, before moving on to paint with limited palette painting, then full colour studies. 


Working with live models each week gives us the chance to really explore the unique features and character of the face and head. 

Beginners and advanced students are both welcomed, as there will be demonstrations of basic techniques as students learn to develop their skills with reference to historic and contemporary artists.

Materials List:

  • A small sketchbook for notes/thumbnail sketches etc

  • A2 paper suitable for painting on (280gsm approx)

  • A selection of charcoal

  • A selection of Acrylic Paints

  • A selection of brushes

  • kitchen roll

  • Palette/perspex sheet

  • glass jar for water

  • Putty rubber

  • Masking tape

Students may also be interested in joining the complementary Introduction to Drawing the Head, which runs on a Thursday from 10.00am - 12.30pm with artist Paul Mowat.
