Wednesdays from 10.00am - 12.30pm

10 Weeks from Wednesday 15th January

to Wednesday 25th March

(No class on Wednesday 12th February)

EDS Studio, 4 Thistle Street NW Lane, EH2 1DR

This is a course for all levels - from beginners to intermediate.

There will be demonstrations and plenty of one-to-one guidance. Students will focus on a variety of different genres: still life, landscape, life, and/or mentoring with personal projects.

Students will learn to experiment with and gain some mastery over their materials while learning to see colour, shape and tone.

Materials List

  • Primed surfaces A4 to A2 approx (card or board primed with gesso)

  • Oil paints (artist quality where possible): ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, lemon yellow, bright red, burnt umber, titanium white, black, plus any colours you may have

  • Zest-It or other low odour thinner (no white spirit or turps)

  • Linseed oil

  • 2 jars with lids

  • Rags

  • A2 tear off palette or other

  • Pencils

  • Rubber

  • Sharpener

  • Apron or painting shirt

  • A variety of brushes including a 1/2 inch, 1 inch (System 3 Daler Rowney filbert are good)

Please note that you will have to take all solvents and rags home at the end of the class.

With oil paint, it is best to try to get artist quality if you can. The cheaper paints have hardly any pigment in and are full of fillers. You end up using more and the colours are not strong. It better to have less of a range of colours and better quality.
