The course is suitable for all levels, from beginners or those who have had some previous experience and wish to enhance their existing skills.

Over this 10-week course, students will build on their practical painting skills through a weekly lecture, assignment and feedback session. Suitable for those with little painting experience through to those seeking to deepen their knowledge and skill-set, this course will teach students how to work with paint as their primary medium of choice.

Working from direct observation in their local environments, students will learn the essentials of working in acrylic and oil paint, from colour mixing, palette preparation, identifying the right supporting materials to exploring different painting processes.

Through painting demonstrations, guided assignments and lectures in art history and contemporary painting practices, students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to begin their own painting practice at home. Through ongoing dialogue with the tutor and their peers, students will be encouraged to deepen and strengthen their formal, pictorial concerns in painting.

Students will gain confidence in using oil and acrylic paint on their own and will be able to experiment with these mediums after gaining a core understanding of their own approach to using paint.

It is essential that students have access to a computer/ laptop/ mobile phone in order to join the week’s teaching, and must be able to send good digital images of their work in order for discussion of their work to take place.

A basic materials list will be emailed to all students in plenty of time before the start of the course.
