Painting Easels

Students will be shown how to simplify the portrait using various techniques, encouraging confident mark making. Working directly from the model to make quick studies and investigations, then more complex and ambitious portrait drawings that capture a likeness and pay attention to facial anatomy.

We will be using basic drawing materials such as charcoal and later in the course there will be the opportunity to add colour and incorporate other mediums such as pastel, watercolour or ink, if you wish.

We will explore our materials, using charcoal in a painterly fashion to make expressive line and marks - rubbing, blending and employing techniques such as ‘reductive tone’ and ‘lifting out’ to create some exciting and unique portraits.
