DAY 2 10am - 2.30pm in the studio at Great King Street (lunch 12.30 - 1.30) The 'power of the sketch' is often an overlooked element of artistic practise. It is through such a level of carefree spontaneity that we often understand our unique qualities as draughtsmen and women and in doing so, can gain added understanding of ourselves. As Van Gogh once said: "In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing." (Letter 136, 24 September 1880) Under Siri's expert guidance, you will explore some of the little known nooks and crannies of Edinburgh. This class will give you the experience of working outside in a sketchbook, and then developing a piece of work from your sketches. The class will be spread over two days. Day one, we’ll go to a location near the school with sketchbooks and a few materials. The emphasis will be on gathering information and impressions. We’ll look at such things as: Finding a good spot to work Thumbnail sketches to establish interesting compositions Staying loose in your drawing Tone and colour. Which materials to use Cropping and editing Abstraction and pattern Layering. There will be plenty of materials on hand and art books for inspiration! Sketchbook pencils eraser a pot of drawing ink watercolours - A rain jacket just incase! A cap or hat to block light coming into the eyes - And of course, please bring yourself!
