Service Description

All Materials Provided No Class Monday 12th October Are you looking for a way to feel more confident and inspired in drawing? Through practical, yet flexible exploratory drawing exercises, demonstrations, and references to drawings from a variety of different artists, you will learn how to ‘map out’ a drawing, discern proportional relationships, look for rhythms, patterns, contours, edges, and tone, and explore a variety of techniques. As well as developing technique and eye-hand co-ordination, you will be developing two essential habits of mind: how to look and how to interpret what it is that you wish to express through your marks in order to capture a particular feeling, detail, or abstraction. Drawing can be understood as the act of translating perception, thought, sensation, or imagination into marks. Scientifically, drawing is a remarkable coordination between visual perception, memory, prediction, motor control, and attention: the brain observes or imagines something, constructs an internal representation, and then the hand or body externalises that representation through movement. Drawing is not merely copying what we see. We draw to understand. A child draws to discover what a thing is; a scientist draws to isolate a structure; an architect draws a possibility before it exists; an artist draws to investigate something that may not yet have words. In that sense, drawing is a form of thinking with the body. It takes something transient—an observation, a feeling, a memory, an idea—and gives it physical existence. Perhaps that is why humans draw: because the world is too complex to simply look at, and drawing allows us to enter into a relationship with it—to slow down, select, question, remember, imagine, and ultimately make the invisible visible. Jeremy Barclay has held a long and rich career as an artist and international art teacher. Originally a landscape painter, he went into teaching and is a multi disciplinary practitioner.
