Service Description
Over ten weeks, Ingrid will introduce students to all the basic techniques of linocut printing, with plenty of hands-on demonstration and 1:1 time with students to work with their individual ideas and requirements. The focus will be on creating original designs and realising them in the print format. Printing will be with a baren and lever press. To this end, drawing skills will be helpful, but support and tuition will be given at all stages of the process, including design, carving and printing. The nature of printmaking means that the simplest designs often really shine and take on a life of their own. Teaching groups are small and will have a friendly, relaxed ambiance with students of all levels welcome, whether beginners or with some previous printmaking experience. Weeks 1 to 3 will start with an introduction to design for print, studying other printmakers work and the history of lino printing to see how others approach the process. Students will then design, carve and print their own creation in one colour. Ingrid will demonstrate all techniques and create a carving practice block to introduce many of the skills needed. Weeks 4 to 6 will see the students make another self-designed print, adding colour in one of various techniques including gradient rolled ink, separate colour blocks or repeat stamping. In weeks 7 to 10, the skills learned so far will be put to the test in making a reduction lino print, in which layers of colour are laid down as the block is gradually carved away. This is a fascinating way of making a print which will involve colour theory and mixing, alignment of paper and block, and visualisation of the design. Equipment and materials are provided, (carving tool, roller and tray etc) available to take away after the course + all the prints that you have made. Please bring with you source material for design of the first single colour print, an old hand towel. Come dressed in old clothes you don't mind getting scruffy in! Ingrid is a printmaker and teacher based in Edinburgh, specialising in lino cut. Originally a painter, her love of process and craft drew her to work with relief printing and she designs and hand presses all her work at her home studio. Curiosity and a creative imagination keep her practise progressing
