Service Description

Thursdays from 1.30pm - 4.00pm 5 Weeks 20th Jan, 27th Jan, 3rd Feb, 10th Feb & 17th Feb Students will be shown how to simplify the portrait using various techniques, encouraging confident mark making. Working directly from the model to make quick studies and investigations, then more complex and ambitious portrait drawings that capture a likeness and pay attention to facial anatomy. We will be using basic drawing materials such as charcoal and later in the course there will be the opportunity to add colour and incorporate other mediums such as pastel, watercolour or ink, if you wish. We will explore our materials, using charcoal in a painterly fashion to make expressive line and marks - rubbing, blending and employing techniques such as ‘reductive tone’ and ‘lifting out’ to create some exciting and unique portraits. Please note that this is a five week course and the same content will be repeated in the second block of the portrait drawing (PDR2) for the term.   Materials •       Willow charcoal size medium plus one bigger stick •       Charcoal pencil , soft or medium •       Compressed charcoal-1 or 2 sticks •       White chalk pastel and /or a white pastel pencil •       Kneadable eraser/putty rubber •       Masking tape •       White cartridge paper sheets A2 •       Grey or toned pastel paper or sugar paper-3 sheets •       A small selection of other drawing materials (optional) Please read Covid-19 Guidelines page for information about studio-based classes.
