Service Description

In this oil painting class, we’ll have a variety of different still life set ups, and will experiment with different lighting and viewpoints. Still life gives us the chance to work on so much - exploring composition, working with colour and tone, and looking at pattern, edges, and rhythm within the painting. We will gain inspiration by looking at work by a variety of painters, and their approach to the subject of still life. This class is suitable for all levels. Materials List - please bring the following to each class: (Don’t worry if you don’t have absolutely everything!) • Oil paints: I use water soluble oils and recommend using them. There are a few brands – Duo, Cobra, and Artisan. - Large tube titanium white - Medium tubes: Cadmium yellow medium, Cadmium yellow light, Yellow ochre, Cadmium red medium, Cadmium red light, Alizarin crimson, Sap green, Ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, Burnt umber, Black (NB – cadmium are always more expensive so it’s fine to go with other reds and yellows!) • Brushes: a selection of brushes - bring what you have. Recommendation: filberts/flats in sizes 2,4,6,8,10; rounds in Sizes 1 and 2; 1 inch house painting brush • Canvases: At least 4 canvases for the course. They could be stretched canvas or canvas boards. Suggested size is around 9 x 12 inches, or 11 x 14 inches. They should already be gessoed and ready to go (many canvases come primed and ready to go). • Rags and paper towels • A lidded jar to take away any solvents (if using oil-based oil paints rather than water soluble) • Pencil • Rubber • Sharpener • Charcoal •Disposable palette pad (recommended, or regular palette if preferred) • Masking tape
