Service Description

Join artist Jonathan Freemantle on an intensive 5-day exploration into landscape painting and drawing. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists. Learn how to - Collect and grind pigments from the surrounding landscape. - Connect to the landscape on a deeper level though drawing and paint sketches. - Make oil and egg tempera paint. - Make drawing instruments collected from the surrounding landscape. - Build a painting from the sketch up to the final painting, while discovering your own personal ‘handwriting’. ⁃ Learn mindfulness techniques to support your creative practice. - Learn basic painting technique - tone, colour, line, composition. Day 1: Connection Explore the surrounding landscape with sketchbooks. Hunt for drawing materials. Paint small oil sketch, while learning about simple ways to approach tone colour mixing. Day 2: Alchemy Collect and grind pigment. Make oil paint. Make egg tempera paint. Experiment with your home made oil and tempera paint while painting a landscape from life. Day 3: Learn from the Masters Learn how to paint like your favourite landscape painter, you choose the master painting and Jonathan will guide you though making a copy of the painting, learning the technique as you go. Day 4: Putting it into practice Combine what you’ve learned from your master copy as well as your explorations into the surrounding landscape and begin a two-day painting, Beginning with sketches, studies and material collection. Learn how to select a subject, how to engage with it more deeply, how to compose the painting and how to begin a larger work. Day 5: Completing your vision Spend the day working on your final painting, bringing all you have seen and learned together with your own handwriting. Learn how to elevate your painting by glazing, scumbling and various mark making methods. Bring drama and personality to your work. Prices range from £1700 - £2300 pp Ex VAT depending on which room you book. Invoices made up upon request. Materials List upon request. Cancellation Policy

We will provide a 50% refund if you give written advance notice up to 30 days before the course start date. 0% refund 30 days before a course starts. Please note there is an administration fee of £5 payable in respect of such refunds to cover payment processing fees. You will need to inform a member of administration staff in writing by emailing EDS at info@edinburghdrawingschool.co.uk. Additionally, if you withdraw for any reason after the course has started you will not be entitled to a refund. We are a small business and we depend on every booking to ensure that classes can go ahead. If a student is unable to attend a class due to illness, then EDS must be informed immediately so that the tutor can be notified. If you are missing a class because you suspect that you have developed Covid-19, please let us know immediately so that we can alert fellow student and tutors. Non-attendance of classes/workshops does not automatically mean a refund, however EDS will assess the circumstance
