Service Description

In this one day course you will have the opportunity to learn the skills of Verre Eglomise or rather – gilding on glass. All materials are provided for this workshop. These materials are precious and are there for you to take home with you to continue your exploration in gilding with gold leaf. The value of this pack is worth £120. These materials include: A Gilders Tip , Gilders Knife, Tamping brush , Glass Baubles , a book of 23ct gold or a book silver leaf. You will be provided with beautiful glass baubles (sphere or heart shaped, gold or silver please let us know) which you will learn to expertly hand finish in gold or silver and given time, finish with a coloured flourish. Jeni is a gilder and framer based in the East Neuk of Fife. Largely self taught, she has gilded everything from 16th and 19th Century frames, to console tables and home light fixings. All made to tone in with their surroundings. While she restores traditional frames, she also gilds bespoke frames for clients and enjoys experimenting with techniques to bring out the best in works. 9.30am – 12.30pm Students will settle in and will be taught to prepare their water size solution and glass surfaces ready for gilding. This should take up to 10- 15mins. Next students will be shown how to confidently handle the gold using their tips (clearly practice makes perfect) before applying a wash to their decorations and applying the leaf. Students will spend the next couple of hours on this to cover their decorations and feel confident handling the leaf and applying it to the glass. 1.30/ 5.5.30pm Checking the status of the decorations. After an hour they should be dry and ready to ‘burnish’. Students now have the option to apply more gold or to apply a patina to create a beautiful colour effect. After the colour has sufficiently dried, lacquer is applied to protect the colour and the leaf.
