Service Description

All Materials Provided 8 weeks Portrait Drawing From Life (Autumn) 8 weeks Portrait Drawing From Life (Spring) 4 models over 8 weeks, 4 Portrait drawings. In this course, we will be drawing with a range from 4B to 2H pencil, starting off with soft pencil for general drawing before using harder pencils for finer details. We will be drawing only in pencil for the entirety of the course to afford students, especially beginner students a level of control, which allows students then to really attempt to observe and attain - proportion - shadow vs light shape - edges (sharp & soft) - rythm (the way different marks and shapes correspond & flow into each other) From these sound foundations, which we will aim to achieve by week 4/5, we will then go into weeks 6,7 & 8 achieving all we are able to in the three hour portrait sessions, but in addition to this make stylistic choices unique to the individualty of the student. Throughout the course, students will be shown a range of reference images on our projector for the first 1/2 hour of every lesson where we will have a group discussion and Q& A session, as well as each student preparing theirt own paper, easel and sharpening their range of pencils to a sharp long point. By the end of the course, students should be able to confidently achieve a likeness to the model, and it is our greatest hope students then go on with these set of skills and beb able to draw models, family and friends in their own time after the course ends. Alicia is the director The Edinburgh Drawing School. Alicia has a long experince in mentoring and teaching children, and is an alumna of The Florence Academy of Art (2014-2019). Her first degree is in The History of Art from The University of York (2005 - 2008). Alicia is a classically trained painter often taking on portrait commisions.
