Service Description

Lino printing – beginners; one colour, one block Ingrid Nilsson (@ING Printmaker) works full time from her home studio making small edition hand-pressed lino prints which she sells via galleries, online store and from art markets across the UK (with occasional overseas appearances!) For 2023, we welcome Ingrid Nilsson to enable her to fulfil a dream to demonstrate and teach printmaking for the first time. Prior to Ingrid's first love of printmaking, she ran her own Edinburgh gallery/café, Bon Papillon, for ten years with her partner, Stuart. She writes: “I have often described my creative journey as a winding path, and while travelling it was often hard to see where it led or what turns it would take. As time moves on, I realise that everything I have experienced en route has accumulated to give me a diverse knowledge. In this workshop: Participants will learn the full process of lino relief printing, from design to the final print. Working from source material, students will learn how to create a design that will translate well to the medium of lino printing. After transferring to the block and discussing the best carving practices with demonstrations, they will then carve the lino. Printing will be by hand with a baren or wooden spoon, with other methods discussed. A number of test prints and adjustments can be made before pulling the final print. A further small block/stamp can be carved and tested to back up the learning from the main block and make a useful stamp for business cards, stationery, and packaging. Materials will be provided for the entire course including inks and paper, with a ‘take-home’ kit of equipment included for further home printmaking. This kit is worth £25 and included in the workshop price. This includes carving handle and blades, roller and tray, spatula and folder, wooden spoon and pencils, fact sheets. This is not a commercially available kit, but hand-chosen by the Ingrid herself. This workshop can be taken as a stand alone workshop or can be followed by the next two workshops in this series from Ingrid.
