with artist & tutor Alicia Coombs Thursdays 1.30 - 4pm referencing Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe

  • Ended
  • 250 British pounds
  • Great King Street

Service Description

This afternoon painting course can be taken as a stand alone, or following the morning drawing class which can serve to make a preparation drawing for the afternoon painting. The model will hold the same pose for morning and afternoon. During the afternoons, students will bring on their drawing of the clothed figure and transform their morning observations into a painting in oil. Students will make 5 paintings over 10 weeks. Together, we will look at how the figure is connected to it's background, and how the surrounding environment can inform and soften the portrait - away from a figure feeling 'superimposed', but more towards a figure which occupies it's surrounding space. The exercise is to find harmony and identity by the use of seeing shapes abstractly, to make a stronger and balanced composition. Samuel John Peploe (b1871 - 1935), was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter, noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists. He was also a beautiful painter of portraits and figures within their settings. Alicia Coombs is manager of The Edinburgh Drawing School, alumna of The Florence Academy of Art, and holds a History of Art BA Hons degree from The University of York. She has worked all over the world to support her studies in Art History and painting, having taught in schools and also privately over the past 15 years. Alicia teaches with a particular focus to bring on a students' drawing & painting techniques. Materials- a detailed list of exact materials will be sent upon signing up to the course.
