Service Description

Join celebrated contemporary artist Jonathan Freemantle as he shares with you his deep and extensive knowledge of master painters through time. Each week you will be introduced to a new master artist’s work. While making a copy of one of their great works you will learn their unique methods and techniques, discovering how each artist approached their world of painting. You will be given step by step guidance to each painting method; so this course is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced artists wanting to add to their skill set. For students wishing to join the course for more than one term there will be the opportunity to develop and deepen the learned methods over time, spending longer on each painting as the year progresses. This course is incredibly popular so if you wish to sign up please do not hesitate! A reference image from The Edinburgh Drawing School's library will be provided for every evening class per student to be able to study closely over the 2.5 hours. Artists Looked at each week Week 1: Leonardo da Vinci Week 2: Lynette Yiadom-Boakye Week 3: Vincent Van Gogh Week 4: Henry Raeburn Week 5: Mark Rothko Week 6: El Greco Week 7: Georgia O'Keeffe Week 8: Johannes Vermeer Week 9: Edgar Degas Week 10: Joseph William Mallord Tuner Materials List - Painting panels, gesso primed white (can be thick card) 30x40cm and 40x50cm. one/week - Oil paints. Basic colours. Titanium white, Payne’s grey, raw umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, sap green, Terrie verde, alizarin crimson, vermilion hue, lamp black. - Acrylic paint (black, white, dark brown) - Boiled linseed oil - Zest it - Brushes (mostly hog, flat and some round)

Cancellation Policy

We will provide a 50% refund if you give written advance notice up to 30 days before the course start date. 0% refund 30 days before a course starts. Please note there is an administration fee of £5 payable in respect of such refunds to cover payment processing fees. You will need to inform a member of administration staff in writing by emailing EDS at Additionally, if you withdraw for any reason after the course has started you will not be entitled to a refund. We are a small business and we depend on every booking to ensure that classes can go ahead. If a student is unable to attend a class due to illness, then EDS must be informed immediately so that the tutor can be notified. If you are missing a class because you suspect that you have developed Covid-19, please let us know immediately so that we can alert fellow student and tutors. Non-attendance of classes/workshops does not automatically mean a refund, however EDS will assess the circumstance
