Service Description
“Books take many shapes and come in a variety of structures that fold and unfold to reveal their contents in unexpected ways” Edward H. Hutchins, book artist & educator Following on from her highly successful workshop with The Edinburgh Drawing School, Augusta Kirkwood will now deliver a 10 week course in Illustration. Augusta Kirkwood will present 5 different formats of illustration over 10 sessions, to accompany a text of their choosing, whether this be a favourite quote, a piece of poetry, an excerpt from a famous novel, the choice belongs to the student. The text may also be a piece of writing the student has written themselves. Augusta will teach students in this course, some of the lesser known ‘non-traditional’ folding formats to best support varying texts – to do each text justice as a stand-alone piece. The aim of this course is to have produced an illustrated work by the end of every two weeks, either the same piece of text illustrated in 5 different ways, or 5 different texts all illustrated as individual works. This workshop is suitable for any adult or teenage student with any level of proficiency in drawing and painting. Augusta is an Edinburgh-based freelance illustrator who specialises in Children’s Book illustration and design. Her illustrations capture the innocence and playfulness of childhood and animal friends, whilst experimenting with textures and colours. With a keen sense of storytelling and love of tactile forms, Augusta is always delighted to find new ways to tell a story and bring text to life. Her illustration style welcomes a variety of techniques and materials including ink, acrylic, coloured pencils, and mono-printing – often combined together to create engaging images. Augusta studied Illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art from 2013-2017 and then graduated with an MSc in Publishing with Distinction from Edinburgh Napier University in 2018. Since, Augusta has illustrated two picture books written by Pippa Goodhart and published by Little Door Books– Daddy Frog and the Moon and Happy Sad. She has enjoyed leading book events with these titles at The Edinburgh International Book Festival, Wigtown Book Festival, and the Borders Book Festival.
