Service Description

Location of the Workshop: Alnwick Castle & Abbeylands farmhouse We are incredibly fortunate to be able to offer you the chance to stay in a farmhouse which borders the picturesque town of Alnwick, famous for its magnificent medieval Castle, parklands and gardens. Classes will take place in Alnwick Castle parklands on our doorstep, the neighbouring countryside and in the various coastal villages just a few miles away. Course Structure Classes will run from 10 to 4 everyday with a break for a picnic lunch provided for you, as well as breakfast and dinner everyday at Abbeylands from your in house chef Day one - Using Value to create a Landscape composition Composition - how to use a pattern of contrasting values to design a painting. We will do quick studies in monochrome using our grey scale markers to create our map. This is the plan for our composition, where we take the initial decisions to simplify the subject through the analysis of the relative lights and darks of the landscape masses At this stage, Chiara will demonstrate the exercise, and explain how to avoid the common pitfalls which lead to failed compositions. The use of a viewfinder to isolate a composition, and how to use a red Perspex sheet to observe value relationships without the distraction of colour. Chiara will address the following themes throughout the week, each theme addressed will involve understanding the effect of aerial perspective on colour, value and edge which is the key to creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. 1 Aerial Perspective on the Ground Plane and how to mix greens to create recession 2 Skies and Clouds Understanding the different colours and values in a sky. Sky gradations - Understanding Different types of clouds Designing clouds to complement to composition and in the correct perspective. 3 Trees, buildings and boats How to construct trees emphasising angle shifts in the contour, understanding the principles of taper and balance as it applies to trunks and branches. We will notice the shifts in value and temperature around the contour of the tree and how this affects the appearance of branches against the sky. We will introduce the principle of colour vibration to enliven the flat planes of man made objects. Please email the school to book this art retreat and for further enquiries about materials, accommodation and invoices. The price is £1700 Ex VAT, all meals, accomodation, and tutoring included.
