Service Description

This is a fun chilled out group who will meet every Saturday at 10.30 am for 3 hours, come rain or shine! Dates: April 25th to June 13th 2026 This course is for complete beginners up to the more experienced. In a group setting but with individual drawing experiences, student work develops over the 8 week course. There will always be dry weather options every week. The 'power of the sketch' is often an overlooked element of artistic practise. It is through such a level of carefree spontaneity that we often understand our unique qualities as draughtsmen and women and in doing so, can gain added understanding of ourselves. As Van Gogh once said: "In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing." (Letter 136, 24 September 1880) Under Kelly's relaxed guidance, you will explore iconic or even perhaps some of the little known nooks and crannies of Edinburgh. With Kelly, she will assist and advise you on everything from composition to colour in your sketches, amongst good company, good coffee and lovely scenery! You then for the rest of the week can bring on your small sketches at home, into larger paintings or drawings for Kelly to critique. The indoor studio at Great King Street is also at the groups' disposal, weather dependant, where you may work on your drawings for Kelly to bring you there as an option. Kelly will instruct the group each week on the meeting place for the following Saturday. Materials - up to you what you would like to use each week! Sketchbook pencils eraser A pot or two of sepia ink A set of watercolours Plastic plate - A rain jacket just incase! - And of course, please bring yourself! Kelly has received several awards, including the Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards, finalist of the 2024 Creative Edinburgh the Development Award and the Honorable Mention in the 3x3 Illustration Awards. Her work has been exhibited in different shows, including the "Now and Then: Visual Arts Scotland Centenary Show," the "Art & Science Exhibition: The Developing Brain," and the SSA 126th Annual Exhibition at The Royal Scottish Academy. Kelly works across painting, drawing, printmaking and illustration. Image credits: Image 1&2&3 by Siri France Image 4 Edward Hopper Image 5 Rembrandt sketchbook
